It's decided, you want to carry your baby. It's a very good idea ♡ Yes, but here it is, you don't really know where to start, you're afraid of doing it wrong and you wouldn't mind a summary for parents who are new to babywearing. So here are our 10 tips to become a baby carrier pro!
1. Respect the child's physiological position
Carrying must absolutely respect your baby's physiological position , known as the "M" position. This is in fact the natural position that the baby takes when you snuggle him against you, halfway between sitting and squatting. His back must be rounded, his pelvis naturally tilted, his knees bent at navel height, his thighs facing upwards and spread apart so that nothing forces on his hips. Finally, his head must be kept in line with his spine to rest on the carrier's chest.
2. Clear baby's airways
In the baby carrier, your child must keep his face uncovered so that he can breathe without hindrance. You must see his little nose and chin free of any obstacles. This is why the upright position is particularly recommended when carrying, especially if your baby suffers from reflux.
3. Carry baby high enough
Sometimes seeing your baby's face in the carrier isn't enough to ensure a comfortable position for him, not to mention that you also have to think about your back. The ideal position for his head is on the top of your chest, right at kissing height. You should be able to kiss him at will without having to contort yourself!
4. Adjust the fabric well
The fabric of your Studio Romeo baby carrier should be snug, so that your baby is held securely against you. It is best to feel a little tight at first! The fabric should be flat against your back.
For the DUO , on the front, make sure to cross them over the top of the baby's back so as to cover his shoulders. Under his buttocks, the fabric of the TWO headbands should be distributed from one knee to the other. Also, as with a classic scarf, do not hesitate to adjust the fabric by doing one or two turns on your shoulders. Finally, remember to pull the fabric up over your shoulders to avoid the batwing effect.
5. Take precautions with a newborn
A newborn is so small that we don't always know how to carry him... However, this is the moment when he most feels the need to be snuggled up against us. Concretely, the rules are the same as for carrying a larger baby, being particularly vigilant about respecting the following safety rules .
6. Dress baby appropriately
If it's hot, consider that the baby carrier will act as a baby garment and don't cover him up too much. If it's cold, don't forget to bring a blanket with you, just in case. And always cover his extremities to protect him from the cold or the sun.
7. Dress in baby carrier mode
Covering your baby is obvious, but thinking about yourself is also essential. For greater comfort, carry your child against you, over a t-shirt or a thin sweater, and then cover yourself (jacket, coat, scarf, etc.). This will prevent both of you from getting hot in case of sunshine, and you will be freer to move around, without the risk of waking your sleeping little one.
8. Protect the child from the sun
If you are lucky enough to live in sunny countries, or if you simply want to enjoy the sun while walking in a baby carrier, remember to protect your child from the sun. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, we do not skimp on the means to take care of their fragile skin.
9. Stay attentive to sensations
Carrying your baby is above all a question of sensations. You must be comfortable while carrying, just as your baby must feel good. Pay attention to the child's signals and behaviors and do not hesitate to adjust his position if necessary.
10. Get support if necessary
If you want to carry your baby but don't feel confident enough to do it alone, consider calling on a professional to help you.
