Welcome to Modetrotter !
It is in her superb showroom in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris that Marie Courroy, creator of Modetrotter , welcomed us to answer our interview The Art of Motherhood . Passionate, spontaneous, creative and a new mother, Marie shares with us her uninhibited vision of fashion and motherhood!
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Marie, I am the founder of the clothing brand Modetrotter .
Your daughter's name is Java, what is the origin of this name?
My friend Alix's cousin (Editor's note: Alix Petit, founder of Heimstone) is called Java, and as soon as I heard it I immediately loved it. In the meantime, I met a little one in Marseille, when I was pregnant, who ended up convincing not me, but Edouard!
Your vision of motherhood
I don't feel like I've changed, but I just have less time ;) I continue to live my life but with my family: we take her everywhere (my father calls her "Javalise") and she adapts perfectly well to our life!
I've never been a fan of motherhood and being pregnant has never been a fantasy either... It's not something I particularly liked (the changing body, the fatigue, the pain, the insomnia etc... clearly it's not my thing at all!). I just couldn't wait for her to be born ;)
Motherhood and Creativity: Does One Influence the Other?
At my place absolutely not.
What is your vision of fashion?
I have a very uninhibited vision of it! I am not a real "creator" in the purist sense of the term - I did not study fashion and I do not have a fashion culture strictly speaking. I make clothes that I like to wear, or that my friends / mother / sisters would like to wear. On the other hand, I like colors and their associations!
How do you create a collection?
I most often start with fabrics to come to shapes. I am inspired by everything around me: the street, people, costumes in films. I am incapable of looking at a work by an artist and then telling people "here is my collection inspired by such and such a work"... I most often start with very concrete things.
CREATORS, BLOGS, BRANDS, ARTISTS... WHO INSPIRES YOU?
There are a lot of very talented designers, but I don't think I can say that they inspire me. I don't know their collections well enough to talk about them. On the other hand, I really like the style of some people, like Dree Hemingway for example.
YOUR ESSENTIALS FOR GOING ON A WALK?
My Heimstone banana, my metro card to be able to leave quickly (not at the moment eh…) , my Burt Bees fig lip balm and always 2/3 lipsticks which are always lying around everywhere…
THE ADVICE YOU WILL NEVER FORGET
That if "I worked, but failed it doesn't matter. You have 2 arms 2 legs you will do something else" from my dad. It always comforted me on the idea of failure.
YOUR SHOT OF HAPPINESS ?
Java's ever-smiling awakening in the morning.
YOUR MANTRA?
You will never regret doing the best you could. Even if you fail.
THE GRIGRIS THAT WON'T LEAVE YOU
My Burt Bees Fig Lipsticks: a real addiction!
Many thanks Marie (who wears Java with our latest NAVY model) and see you soon after the lockdown!
