Visiting Scotland with family with Nina Davidson
Nina Davidson is a French expat in Scotland. This young mother of three children, Ada, Colette and Nicole, takes us on a city tour of her adopted region. She shares her favourite family-friendly addresses. Let's go for a summer getaway between Scottish pubs, the beach and walks in the green hills!
Starting point: a stroll in Edinburgh
Art of living in the Portobello district
Let's start with Edinburgh! The Portobello district is Edinburgh's beach. A beautiful stretch of sand with a promenade and parks for children. All along the main street called High Street, there are small independent shops that give a village feel to this suburb of the capital and a lovely bookshop The Portobello Bookshop .

A kid friendly pub: the Skylark
Take a break in a kid friendly pub: the Skylark! I will of course be a little biased because it is mine… We opened 8 years ago, a few days before my eldest was born. We serve a very small menu made on site, in an open kitchen. We have superb beers from Scottish micro-breweries, organic and natural wines carefully selected.

The best Fish & Chips
Anstruther Fish Bar is the best fish and chip shop in my opinion. Be prepared to queue for a traditional battered haddock with large chips. Eat on the fishing harbour. It's a bit of a detour because it's located in the Kingdom of Fife , but it's worth it!

Secret places to visit in Scotland
Against all odds, I will give some places to visit in the Scottish Borders region, in the south of Scotland. Holidaymakers tend to arrive in Edinburgh before heading north to the Highlands. The Borders is the region south of Edinburgh and extends to England. It is full of completely isolated, beautiful and little-known corners. If you are looking not to meet other foreigners, this is the right place.
Best spot for a picnic: St Mary's Loch
From Edinburgh, head south towards Innerleithen and then on to St Mary's Loch . The whole area is beautiful, with valley roads often single track. The lochside is very picturesque. There are no shops nearby, so bring a picnic. Unfortunately the Tibbie Shiels Inn is no longer open to the public. For the record, it was the valley's inn, pub and campsite, opened in 1824 by my daughters' great-great-great-great-great-grandmother!
The most beautiful viewpoint
The road from St Mary's Loch to Talla is one of the most beautiful in my opinion, winding and undulating. The summit overlooks the reservoir where the views are breathtaking.
