If you have trouble staying still and you're not a fan of club holidays, here are our best tips for planning your next road trip and demystifying this mode of travel with children!
1. Prepare your circuit
We draw inspiration from the stories of other travelers on travel blogs and then we start to concretize the stages of our itinerary by drawing inspiration from the "family" circuits of travel agencies (Voyageurs du Monde, Terre d'Av, Nomade Aventure, etc.) which offer circuits specially designed for families. This will give you ideas for itineraries, places to visit, activities to do with children.
We establish our itinerary and choose the appropriate mode of transport (we recommend Rome2rio , a search engine that allows you to visualize several possible routes by car, train, plane, bus or taxi to go from point A to point B).
Don't forget that you are traveling with children: No more than 3 hours of driving per day (on average) and plan for at least 2 nights (3 at best) in the same place.
2. Book as many things as possible before departure
Hotel rooms, transportation… And yes, it’s a little less of an adventure but Finding yourself looking for a room at the end of the day with young children is downright a pain! We therefore advise you to book in advance to make the most of it and optimize your time and energy.
3. Prepare… but not too much!
Because not everything will necessarily go as planned, you have to leave yourself free time for discovery, adventure and rest because a road trip is also a vacation!
So don't plan too busy a schedule, space out activities, plan days off...
4. Make a list
Because let's be honest, our brains need a little help after having kids ;)
Here are our 9 essentials for a successful road trip:
- A notebook and felt-tip pens for drawing
- A travel suitcase, kitsch but super practical
- Toys and books that aren't too noisy
- An iPad mini (Very handy when driving at night or when all else fails)
- Easily accessible spare clothes and diapers
- Water bottles and snack boxes that don't spill
- For a baby, a hanging toy to distract him in difficult moments
- A stock of music, songs and stories
- For sleeping, travel beds (here we are fans of the inflatable mattresses with integrated “ ready-to-sleep ” duvet from Verbaudet.
Have a nice road trip ♡
